In our western cultures, obsession with technology (primarily for entertainment) and consumption-oriented lifestyle push our time spent on electronic devices above any reasonable limit. Soon we will be constantly plugged in and online, scrolling and binging all our waking hours. We are already seeing how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet-Of-Things (IoT) enable ubiquitous automatization and disruptions of many jobs, inevitably leading to more dependence, more anxiety, less freedom, more unhealthy lifestyle and more screen addictions. 

More and more people choose a sedentary lifestyle, moving too little (except eyes and fingers), overeating unhealthy food, and developing addictions (like alcohol, drugs, gaming, gambling, and social media). Despite virtual connections with the whole world and complete knowledge at one touch, people are more anxious, lonely and depressed than ever. 

Prioritizing immediate pleasures, instant gratification and unsustainable consumption, are pushing us over the edge. As a result, we destroy our health, our healthy environment and our healthy future. A combination of media, technology, marketing and exploitation of human weaknesses shape societies with less love, less compassion, less focus and less care for natural ecosystems. Ultimately, the amount of time individuals spend on electronic devices is determined by their health awareness, job requirements, variety of healthy lifestyle activities and overall quality of life

Think about limiting your screen and sedentary time by changing your lifestyle, adjusting your work routine, adding outdoor and creative activities and focusing on long-term health goals.

However, according to a recent American Academy of Pediatrics study, children and teenagers in the United States spend an average of 7 hours per day on electronic devices, while adults spend an average of 8 hours per day. Therefore, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children and teenagers not spend more than two hours per day on electronic devices. In comparison, adults should limit their screen time to no more than four hours per day. Therefore, it is vital for individuals to monitor their screen time and ensure that it is reasonable.

Why Is Excessive Time On Electronic Devices Harmful?

Excessive time spent on electronic devices can be harmful in several ways.

Sleep problems: The blue light emitted by electronic devices can interfere with the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps to regulate sleep. As a result, excessive screen time can lead to difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently during the night, and not getting enough restful sleep.

Mental health problems: Excessive screen time has been linked to various mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, addictions and attention problems. Social media, in particular, has been shown to increase feelings of loneliness and social isolation and can lead to negative body image and self-esteem issues.

10 Ways To Reduce Screen Time

There are several ways to reduce screen time and ensure it is reasonable. So you free more time for yourself, your family, your creations and explorations of nature. 

Some strategies that may be helpful include:

Set limits on how much time you or your children spend on electronic devices, and stick to those limits. For example, you could set a limit of two hours per day for children and teenagers and four hours per day for adults.

Create designated times for using electronic devices, and stick to those times. For example, you could set specific times of the day, such as after school or after dinner, as when it is okay to use electronic devices. During work, you can specify only a few times to check your devices so you can be more focused and efficient.

Make sure that other activities, such as exercise, outdoor play, going into nature and socializing with friends and family, are a regular part of your routine. This can reduce the time you or your children spend on electronic devices and increase your well-being and a sense of purpose. And you will feel physically and emotionally great, full of healthy energy.

Avoid using electronic devices the hour before bedtime, as the blue light from screens can interfere with sleep. Also, stretching your brain with too much artificial visual stimulation and postponing going to bed will not help you get enough sleep time (your brain and body need it).

Turn off notifications for social media and other apps, as they are designed to distract you and increase your time on your phone or other devices.

Create a technology-free zone in your home, such as a designated room or area where electronic devices are not allowed. Use these areas for creativity, exercising, laughing, painting, writing or learning to play some instrument.

We Can Not Increase Motivation If We Stay Slaves Of Ignorant Consumption

Instead of searching for experiences that make us feel alive, we look for quick fixes and destructive addictions. For example, we choose high-sugar pleasure food, damaging alcohol, ridiculous gambling, luxury shopping, endless entertainment, and social media as distractions. The list is endless. We don't have enough motivation to do anything other than repeat the same vicious cycle all over again and get nowhere.

Our time is wasted, and our lives joyless. Our children play stupid, violent harmful games all the time as we don't know how to inspire them for anything else. We feel overwhelmed by the jobs we hate. So first, we lose our health to get some money, and then we lose more money to recover our health. Money is our ruler, as we are the slave of mindless consumption.
